[ High Treason, Again ] OPEN
WHO: Ryne/Minifilia (
edensgrace), Thancred (
credal) and you
WHAT: With Thancred's arrival, the question of Ryne's defection changed from "if" to "when." With the faction leaders gone, that answer changed to "now."
WHERE: Forsvar, The Moon Temple, some of the local environs
WHEN: All during the second half of the event, particularly from the 27th onward.
WARNINGS: ShB spoilers possible/likely, will warn if anything else comes up
A. To Fire and Sword (Moon and Neutral territories)
[ Neither Thancred or Ryne are wont to sit around while there's things to be done.
You're more likely to run into one of them without the other the first few days after the snows fall, as they still are trying to keep up appearances. Ryne in particular can be found helping with various tasks such as helping melt snow or distributing some of the newly-regrown food to the more destitute in and around Kyst.
After monsters begin to stalk the land, however, their skills are best utilized elsewhere. Both are proficient at fighting, especially as a team, and are able to drive off any that appear too close to city borders or people trying to make it to safety. Ryne also spends much time reinforcing wards especially around major communities, though she's reluctant at this point to venture outside of Moon or neutral territories. ]
B. Flight (Forsvar, early 28th)
[ The news about the faction leaders spread quickly. Their resulting plan comes together about as quickly. To the point that by late night on the 27th, they're starting to put it into action
Forsvar is the safe haven in the neutral territories, so it's there that they meet. They stay the night there, waiting out the worst of the travel conditions, resting and gathering the supplies they'll need. Thancred is better at acting like nothing's wrong, like everything is normal, and with his own tattoo hidden, it's almost impossible to tell that something might be going down from looking at him. Ryne however, is more visibly nervous, and there's still the curious glances that some of the natives throw them.
Then of course, when day breaks on the 28th, they can be found at the edge of the settlement. And whatever else about their situation may be unclear, what will be clear is when Thancred starts to lead Ryne resolutely away from the settlement towards the Gods Wood, and the mirror elsewhere. ]
C. Canticle (The Moon Temple, closed to Moon folks)
[ When night falls... well. They might still be out helping as they can. But for the most part, Thancred and Ryne retreat to safety. Which is a bit more of an affair than it usually might have been.
In contrast to some of her fellow Stars-aligned, Ryne is actually allowed in the Moon Temple. With caveats. She had to swear upon entry that she would speak with the Priestess as soon as she returned about formally defecting. And everywhere she goes, she's flanked by at least one, if not two guards. Along with Thancred himself. The guards themselves might be enough of a tip that something is odd about this situation, but if that isn't enough, well... Ryne's constellation tattoo is on her neck, hardly difficult to see.
When they're awake at least, they can be found mostly around Thancred's room on the housing floor, though Ryne does take some time to wander out to the gardens. As if she hopes the sky above might help ease some of the suffocating feeling of being followed, at all times. ]
D. Wildcard/Misc.

b. and obvs both
He was planning on shadowing them and gathering more information, but the man suddenly starts leading them out of town and he's got a decision to make now.]
Hey, you guys off on a hunting expedition?
[His own tattoo remains hidden under the gloves he wears and he prefers his Jedi robes over blending in with the colours of his Court so the only way to identify his faction is to have seen him around.]
no subject
The end result is still the same, though. ]
You're from the Court.
[ It's half a statement and half a veiled warning to her companion, who her eyes flicker towards uneasily. Of course they would have complications, right at the worst possible moment. She'll follow Thancred's lead though. He's a lot better at this sort of thing than her. ]
no subject
And if we are? [No, wait, that sounds a little too hostile...] She needs the experience with her blades, given what's befallen us.
[Which is not wrong, Ryne does need the experience, moreso than ever so when they return to Norvrandt, she's well prepared to live life without the Scions or the Warrior. But Thancred never addressed the question properly-- exploiting loopholes is easy.]
no subject
He fakes a grin, ignoring the tension.]
Mind if I tag along then? I could use the exercise.
[He activates his lightsaber and does a careless swing as if loosening up. It's a quiet show of force that could be easily denied and would hopefully indicate to her that if she was in trouble, he could handle it.]
no subject
Letting out a quiet noise, she takes half a step back, closer to Thancred. But once that passes, she takes half a moment to steel herself, before actually speaking up. ]
Surely there's enough that needs to be done here? With everything that's been going on. We'll be fine.
[ That much is all true, at least. Though the "fine" part may depend heavily on how this turns out. ]
no subject
A stranger who's just blatantly drawn a blade right before someone's child, without warning.
[Still, he does not like the looks of that weapon, whatever it would be, and places his hand on Ryne's shoulder, putting himself in between his girl and the man. How dare he, even in this tentative stalemate?]
Forgive me if I'm reluctant to allow you anywhere near her.
no subject
Then let me put it this way. I've never seen you around before and she's been really nervous the whole time she's been with you.
no subject
Ryne closes her eyes for a second, grimacing and cursing her relative inability to hide her emotions. She's grateful to Thancred for him stepping forward to protect her. But now she puts her hand on his, the one on her shoulder - and steps forward herself, until they're on a level. ]
He's not lying. Thancred is a father to me in all but blood.
[ Gods, this was dangerous. Her would-be "savior" here was there at that first audience. He was there when Ryne had openly admitted she had close ties to people in the Moon Temple. Thancred hadn't been among them at the time, but it still wouldn't be difficult to make the connection anyway. But Thancred had already claimed her, how could she not do the same?
She could only pray that it wasn't showing too much of their hand. ]
My feelings are no one's fault but my own. We simply want to leave in peace.
no subject
[This time Thancred situates himself to properly hide her from view, and begin to shuffle her backwards, towards open areas-- dangerous, but Thancred knows if they manage to go past that, there will be more cover to hide behind... And Moon territory.]
If this is truly how the Court operates, then I am in the right to take Ryne away.
no subject
So we're running away even after the guarantees the Emperor made.
[He hadn't been paying any particular attention to Ryne at the time, but knowing that the Court would be willing to extend an open hand to those not of their faction had been a factor in Anakin agreeing to help.]
You can still change your mind. I won't say anything.
no subject
This isn't a decision she makes lightly. ]
No. I won't, I can't. I can't just stand by and watch this world die. And I will not fight my family to do so.
[ There's so much she wants to add, can add. How she's literally lived this scenario before. How the peace the Emperor is suggesting always comes at a cost: if not now then someday, as more and more life seeps from the land. How they're all risking bringing down their worlds with them. But the words would take too long to put themselves together in her head, she thinks, and she doesn't even know if it'd do any good. So instead, she settles for something simpler. ]
I don't know if this way is right. But I do know which way is wrong.
no subject
Norvrandt never had any need for spies.
Bugger this.]
That's enough-- it's clear this one wont listen. [Thancred begins to push her with one hand, as if attempting to put distance between them, an unspoken signal to get ready to run. His other hand comes up, holding onto his gunblade, but not yet drawing it.
He'll make a distraction, if need be.]
On my count-- are you ready?
no subject
I'm not saving this world only to doom mine.
[He's had time for his abilities to mostly settle that he instinctively knows something was about to happen. Not willing to let them make the first move he draws his free hand back and throws it forward, pushing a blast of force at Thancred aiming to throw him off his feet.]
no subject
R-ready.
[ Her hands are already moving to her daggers as she takes several hasty steps backwards, trying to maintain that delicate balance of "know where you're going" and "don't turn your back on your opponent." ]
no subject
He drew blades on Ryne, has shown he's willing to do so to children.
No one can be safe around him.
Thancred turns his head just enough to look at Ryne over his shoulder.]
Run. You know where to go, what to do. [Should they be separated, he's sure they will find each other again.
As for his part... Thancred draws his gunblade, the blade snapping into place now that it's been removed from its holster. Yet he doesn't get a chance to do anything, tossed down to the ground by... what is that-- magicks?]
sorry about the delay i was overseas for a bit
This is your last warning.
np I couldn't decide so I rolled and Thancred got a 9/10 on convince so
Thancred!
[ Anakin is very nearly right. There's a huge part of her that wants to yell at Thancred for even suggesting such a thing. Given what had happened last time, what had nearly happened, and there was no potential for the others to find him in time the way there had been with Urianger and the twins.
This isn't quite like Ahm Araeng, though. Unlike Ran'jit, Anakin hadn't gone straight on the offensive. Even now, And if she were to run now, she wouldn't as obviously boxed in the way she was when heading towards Nabaath Araeng. And more than anything, she is the one that he wants to stop. Unlike how Ran'jit's goal, which was ultimately to stop the ones bringing back the night.
She turns and sprints.
She makes a beeline straight for the trees, in the hopes of breaking his line of sight. If she gets a good opportunity, she'll try to Hide. ]
c gimme whoever, I'll take either or both
Geez, fellas. You ever learn how to give a girl her space?
[Sure, she's from the Stars faction, but the fact that they're literally with her everywhere she goes just doesn't sit right with him. If she'd planned on sabotaging anything, it wouldn't be out in the open, nor would she even be here in the first place. Besides, being that close is only going to make her more uncomfortable, if she isn't enough already.]
/o/
It's all right. It's only meant to be temporary.
[ Just until the Priestess gets back. ... whenever that may be. ]
walks in late w/o starbucks to show for it
Or primary, if the dirty looks he gives the guards are any indication.]
She is, after all, from the Court. Peaceful intentions she may have... None know what to do without the Priestess.
pls as if there's anything later than my ass EDITS A MILLION TIMES
Doesn't make it any easier. [He places his hands behind his head, walking alongside her but still giving her space. Thancred speaks up then, and Nero casts a glance at him, making a note of her own guard- or at least someone who's close. He doesn't assume anything here, the last few times he did he actually landed on his ass and looked like an idiot, and he'd rather not do that again.]
Yeah, no kidding. [A pause.] I've met the Priestess but she's real quiet, definitely different from what I'm used to seeing. [Another glance at the guards has them looking between the three with both curiosity and suspicion. Nero lets out a bit of a smirk at them.] Not that it's a bad thing, you two. Just different.
[The guards seem to lessen a little on suspicion, but- well. Only so much can be done when a member of the Court is in proximity, and their own leader is suddenly gone. They're a little lost without her.]
no subject
You were at last month's audience? [ Her knowledge makes the guards start a little, which makes Ryne start in turn. ] Ah- I'm sorry. H- One of my friends told me there would be an audience, the around the same time we were going to have one, over at the Court. He's also from the Moon Temple. It seems to be something of a trend.
[ Gods she hates this. She still hates this. That's one thing that will be so much better once this is finally over - being able to talk to her friends safely, without fear of reprisals. ]
no subject
If they so much as react wrong...]
You never know who has an itchy trigger finger, around here.
But now you know why she defected-- she has friends here. From home.
no subject
Yeah, no kidding.
[Still, he's no stranger to the tension in the room, eyes flicking to her guardian before continuing. Nero whistles at that, about the fact that Thancred has given him.] Can't blame you. I know the feeling, honestly.
[His was a little different, mostly because it was between family, but the point still stands.]
No word on when the Priestess is back yet, right?
no subject
With that in mind, she keeps her thoughts simpler. Not that she has much to say on this, either. Except that maybe, the Emperor was missing too. Which was why they'd taken this chance. ]
I don't believe so, no. No one seems to have any idea.
no subject
Though it would have been better if she did.
[The intense sarcasm, can you feel it?]
c! both is good. :3
The sight of two guards flanking her even more so. Sure, she's Court, but--she's just a girl! One who was jumping at flickers of light, and one who has the mental fortitude to understand the problem the Emperor has raised with their decision. Maybe her companion would kill them with a look if he could, but one girl can't be worth that kind of reaction. Lightning shifts course mid-stride, takes in the less than pleased looks on the guards faces along with how close they are, and all but glares herself.]
Hey! Back up!
[One of the guards turns. "She's from the Court--"]
She's one person, not a monster. Back up.
[Give Ryne some space or so help her--]
GAH hit enter early >o<
As for Ryne, she's already turning - that was certainly a familiar voice, and not an unwelcome one at that. ]
Thank you. [ It's all she can really say. She glances back at Thancred briefly - hoping to convey that, hey, Lightning is a friend. Or she hopes, at least - before turning back and ducking her head a bit. ]
As you can see... I can't just sit and wait for this world to die, either.
no subject
Can't just wait for the world to die, huh? She's come to the Temple, under guard, and saying things like that...she's switched sides. Stepped away from the Emperor she was at least partially sympathetic towards and taken her life into her own hands. Though it's brief, barely more than a flicker, a smile quirks at one side of Lightning's mouth. Good. They'll need every set of hands they can get on this. She nods firmly, accepting of Ryne's resolve, before her eyes find Thancred.]
Friend of yours?
[Or does she need to get involved again?]
no subject
This is Thancred. He's... my father, for all intents and purposes.
[ In every way that mattered, certainly. ]
no subject
Good to know. [She snorts. Seems she won't have to intervene a second time. Not with him, at least.] That explains why he looked ready to kill those guards a minute ago.
[Or maybe that's just his face. Hard to really say for sure.]
Have they been giving you trouble long?
no subject
Instead, Lightning's question. ]
So long as I'm in the Temple itself. I have to wait until I can speak to the Priestess, to make my leaving the Court of Stars official. And since she's disappeared, the same as the Emperor...
[ She sighs and shakes her head briefly. ]
We're rather stuck, until then.
no subject
[Which is in itself a big problem. The attendants here are frazzled but not panicked, yet. It's always yet, isn't it. No answers, no audiences, no nothing. Just empty halls and people in danger. The rot's gone, sure, but trade one problem for another and it just. It's a mess. She sighs.]
Cross your fingers you don't end up regretting coming over here. It's not like we've made any moves against the Emperor yet.
[Idle hands and all that. As big a threat as the Emperor is, the Priestess was sitting on her hands before they arrived. It still doesn't make sense.]
finally squeezes in here
[Those are the dulcet of a highly-experienced spy, who has watched an empire eat itself and its own, and knows how war works from several ends. And how politics work.
Of course, him saying this would be rather hypocritical, given he's a man who just made off with a member of the opposing faction, but he still does not consider himself truly part of the Temple. Not until his ward is.]
Friend of yours? [That's for Ryne, as he hands her an apple. His expression is still sour, but he has what he wants now.]
no subject
This is Lightning. We met at the Harvest Festival.
[ The one Thancred might remember her talking about during that dream encounter of sorts they'd had. The one from before he'd woken up in Fellden proper. ]
I still don't know how I feel about this war, truly. I just... I can't support what the Emperor wishes for this world. Especially if it does spell the death of our own.
[ She also doesn't say it, but she and Thancred have already discussed the possibility of what they might need to do, if the Temple turns out to be little better than the Court. While she thinks Lightning might understand, it's absolutely not a conversation to be had with her guards nearby. ]
no subject
Better to go down fighting than not, right? [A nod. She can absolutely understand that. One corner of her mouth quirks upwards, but she's too tired to keep it there for long. Her eyes flick to the guards, still too close for comfort, and she lowers her voice.] Whatever you do, keep your guard up. Both of you. You can't trust either of them.
[To do nothing and let the world die, or say you'll do something but do nothing either way. Neither side is in the right here. Better to be cautious than dead.
b is for BOTH
he doesn't think anything of it when he spies the two of them together, even though its alongside the edge of the settlement. he hadn't thought to ask thancred which side he'd been pulled towards when he'd met him briefly, but he did know that ryne was from the court as well. )
Hey, careful— ( the leaders were gone, sure— but the guards were surely still upholding their 'duties.' which is why he'll quickly glance around to make sure there weren't any around. ) Doubt you'll be getting a warm welcome over that way, even with all the chaos going on.
no subject
[ Well. This'll make the second time that Noct's accidentally left Ryne in a state of some distress. This time though, the cause is fear, worry. His comment is... a little too on-the-mark, given what they're trying to do. ]
Wh- what are you talking about?
no subject
We're well aware of where we're going, thanks. And we've made our choice. [Does it seem as if he's implying he himself is of the Court? Indeed. He's attempting to give this person the wrong impression.]
sorry for the delay here guys! rough week+.......
( a brow hoists at that, as noct looks from one to the other, trying to figure out just exactly what that was supposed to mean. )
Some... kind of intel mission on the other side, then? ( he lowers his voice as he says it, just in case. ) I mean, it's not a bad idea but if the Moon Temple guys figure out that you're not supposed to be there...
( he shakes his head, leaning in towards the two of them just a little. )
Could be bad news, you know? ( there's a glance thancred's way as he says it, knowing that a guy with a blade like that could probably protect himself well enough, but... ryne seemed like a good kid, so not warning them was probably the jerk option, right? )
a, neutral areas (mostly for Ryne but Thancred can come visit too!) lmk if i need to edit anything!
After receiving a small amount of instruction, she sets her plush cat by her feet and gets to work clearing out the snow. Magical energy flows through her fingertips, gradually melting away batches of snow with small bursts of flame. First the growth magic, now this. Though the spell is very low-level, it's still surprising how quickly it comes to her.
As she pauses for a break, she looks curiously at others, her sights eventually settling on a red-haired girl. How is she faring? ]
np it looks good! 'u'
Hello. How are you doing?
no subject
I'm doing good, I think.
[ Her voice is soft, just above a whisper. More than "okay", honestly. With a raised palm, she sends forth wisp of flame towards a mound of snow. ]
Ah. [ A small noise of surprise, nearly jumping at how effortlessly she'd cast the spell again. ] This is... new to me. But I'm glad I can help.
A | Fighting
Coming in immediately to fight the furious spirits was a dark-skinned knight in armor. Her blade ran over the ground and sparked until it came in contact with the thick liquid, and set it on fire.
Her young page was taking position well away from her. The knight herself was now between Ryne or Thancred, sliding in to push her shield forward, steeling herself against the screaming terrors that tried grasping at her.
"Behind me! Use ranged attacks!"
