The Harvest Moon (OPEN)

WHO: Jessica Jones and OPEN
WHAT: Harvest Event: Beating bandits, helping haul things in, looking into magic
WHERE: In and around the Moon Temple and its city, Kyst
WHEN: 14th - 22nd (First half of Event)
WARNINGS: Likely language, gratuitous violence, alcohol. Will update if needed. (Starting in prose, can match to brackets if preferred)

☪ Workload - (Moon Cities)

If there was one thing Jess could do, it was carry loads heavier than people thought she could. Trish would make some comment about it being figurative and literal, but Jess was trying not to think too much about Trish right now. She missed her. They were supposed to be getting back into their usual swing of things and then she'd found herself here. Now she'd been asked to fight -- however she could -- for a war that wasn't hers to keep her world safe. She didn't care too much about the world in general, but she gave a shit about some of the lives that still dotted it. So she'd play along for now. Watching kids wasn't something she felt either her or the children should have to suffer through, but hauling in heavy loads and moving fences and hay bales was easier for her than some others. So for anyone in and around the cities of the Moon Temple, Jessica Jones might be seen carrying a seemingly heavy load with ease, or possibly hammering a post down into the ground. The physical labor helped her not have to think about everything else that was going on. It was just easier to work herself into being tired enough to fall asleep.

☪ Bandits? Bandonts. - (Moon Cities)

She hadn't gone to the armory or weapon places here yet. Not really into learning how to swing a sword or fire a bow. She wasn't from the land of hobbits and trolls, after all. Of course, she'd never liked guns either. Weapons just weren't her style. Not when she could make everything around her a weapon. Even an apple could be a weapon if it was hurled hard enough, as one bandit found out when he was fleeing. Jess might not want to shoot him in the back, but she had a good arm and she'd knock his punk ass out while she took off after a few others who'd decided to raid a couple coming to the city with their kids. It was the kids she was doing it for, not the parents- that's what she kept telling herself. They hadn't looked hurt, but they'd been afraid, and Jessica was tired of people being afraid of goddamn bullies.

Any time Jessica heard of a bandit hitting an area near her, or came across someone scurrying from a house with people screaming, she could easily be found picking up the nearest stick, apple, or rock to go chase them down with. Even into the woods. Maybe she'll encounter a few other helpful types?

☪ Magic means - (Moon Cities/Kyst)

She hadn't had much when she'd come here, just her side bag and whatever had been in it. Fortunately, or unfortunately for her, that included her camera. Which wasn't going to be too useful in a place where no one had a goddamn clue what any of it did. She'd gone to the R&D department of the Temple, and after some oohing and ahing, they'd offered to take a look to see how to make it perform without needing a laptop or printer. But one of their suggestions had been to go look up some of the schools of magic. That there were ways to make things appear, to conjure, to make something out of nothing that she could tie in with her 'science'.

So Jessica could be found nosing around the Temple, nosing around whatever libraries she could find that might give her an indication, and even taking a mirror over to Kyst to see if there was more she could find out about magic there. And it all just seemed like bullshit to her. Magic... Jesus. Wasn't what she was bad enough? But she was here, it wasn't a dream, and she'd made her bonded promise to the Priestess. She might not want to go stick a sword in someone's gut, but she could gather information. Maybe it wouldn't come in as handy as she was used to it being, but her camera had been a part of her work for so long. It was as good a place to start as any. She can be found in any of the aforementioned places, possibly asking about or reading a book on, yes... magic.

☪ Wildcard - (Moon Cities/Kyst)

Something else you'd like to do? Somewhere else or something more specific you'd like for a scenario. Please feel free to start something at your leisure. I'm available via PM or Plurk (junglewere) for plotting.

Workload

He had seen her a few times, helping at the same or nearby villages he'd chosen. The first time he noticed her, there was an impulse to help her and offer to carry the heavy loads himself, but watching her carefully, it was obvious this was nothing to her. So he didn't bother and left her to do what she wanted. He couldn't account for her strength, but with so many bizarre things, this didn't register in his mind.

She had already had set to work on a task he was thinking of as he finished bundling up the last of the hay he collected, tossing it onto the back of a carriage. The long posts would need to be done quickly before night fell and it seemed she was already half way through. "You work fast."

He caught the smile, at least a glimpse of it. He wouldn't think much of it, aside from it being similar to the small smirk he had when he noticed her. It was a rare break from both of their sullen personalities apparently. He nodded in approval at her work, already stretching across the field. She had a head start. "When you work like this, I don't think they'll want to take over."

His eyes scanned the fields nearby. There was no flash of white or sounds of Ghost hunting. It meant that he found something further ahead. Likely could be a bear, it wouldn't be a surprise, honestly. "He's somewhere. He likes to roam when we're out in the open like this. The Temple is too small for him."

"You actually need my help?" He grins at her, quirking a brow at her comment. Given how far she had gotten, he was prepared to simply sit and admire her work ethic and abilities (even if he hated being idle). The invitation to do something was at least better, even allowing him to poke a bit of fun at her. He stooped to steady and straighten the next post, holding it firm for her to strike.

"Neither am I, I've heard stories of some, but temples were for faiths that weren't my own. It's strange the Priestess is leader of our faction but we don't know what she's priestess of or what her temple worships." If anything at all. "It could be an arbitrary title, but it's an odd one to choose."

"No, no tarot." But that should have been pretty obvious given her rhetorical question. He might feel embarrassed asking such a simple question about the Priestess, but how was he really supposed to know? It wasn't worth blushing over. "There are a number of things that exist here that we don't have in my world." And too many similarities.

He looked up, not having heard about the other closed shrines. "Lovers and Tower?" Three might be a coincidence but 5? If they were all lining up with her cards, it almost seemed intentional. "It might be worth finding out what the cards mean? If there are shrines of those symbols, the meaning could become important to us." Did that mean there were other factions before this one?

He shrugged his shoulders. He was no great believer in magic himself, despite its effect on his life, but belief didn't always have to run two ways. Someone else's faith could do more damage than his own. "I wouldn't dismiss any information that might help us understand this place better, whether I find it important or not. With how little we're told, even a false lead is better than none."

Jessica always had a way of being condescending and complimentary at the same time, despite what she said or how she said it, she still managed to make him smile. "It seems I found a role for myself here then. I'll hold your posts. It'll be my contribution to the war."

He wasn't sure if he could see that softness, but he suspected it was there regardless. She wouldn't be out here doing this if there wasn't some desire to help. Maybe it was his optimism, but he doubt that Jessica would do something just for personal gains. It might be a part of things, but there had to be some element of caring in it. He knew this type of personality, having seen it before, and he knew what was beneath the surface.

"He would take all winter to get it done." They were certainly quicker at this, and with her one, two strokes, they'd be finished before the day was over. "Of course, we'll have to start this over again tomorrow with the next house." He had already heard of a few more neighbors eager to have the same work done.

It had been a slip of the tongue, catching him off guard when she repeated it to him. Did he really say "we?" She seemed to take it well enough, responding to him in the manner he was starting to expect from her. She at least didn't laugh off his presumption. "If you look at my hands, you'll find a few blisters from today. You're the one telling me to hold the posts, you have no one to blame but yourself."

"Because I'm from this sort of world, you think I know about farming?" Turn about was fair play and he wasn't about to ignore the chance to tease her in return. "Do you think that everyone from a magical world can cast magic?" Expand your mind, Jessica. "I know how to hunt and camp, but I never farmed before this in my life."

She was better off with something other than those gowns. He could picture her in the furs of the Freefolk, but this style of hers that was wholly her world, it suited her far better than anything else. "No, but you seem to have adapted. As long as you aren't being asked to pull a plow, I think you can manage."

magic means /o/

[personal profile] gilgamess 2019-09-15 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Truth be told, Gilgamesh had been watching this woman from afar for a while now, and he had been quietly forming his own opinions. During the audience with that Priestess, she had spoken first and she had spoken vigorously, demanding answers. Intriguing. A cynical idealist, was it? This world did not seem to lack for those -- lives marked by some obscured cruel turn, some Damage done to the soul, yet still, these individuals were not truly corrupted. This woman, harsh as her rebukes had been, had wished to avoid violence, had yielded easily to the soothing tone of that Priestess, had given away her own lingering desire for belief in a grand and benevolent scheme, in order out of chaos.

Now, she seeks magic? It is almost amusing. He is no mage, but he was summoned by the grand mingling of magic and technology and partnered with a wizard. Gilgamesh in his current incarnation is a creature born from magic, even if his most recent summoning had been in an era when magecraft in its proper and historical form had died out, when the Holy Grail Wars had become something altogether different. Technology, magic; his mind is familiar with untold generations of both, even if he, like most other heroic spirits aside from Casters, is an entity apart.

"Seeking magecraft, are you?" -- stating the obvious, but a "hello" would be unsuitable to either of their dispositions; meaningless pleasantries, after all. "Hah, the purview of those scheming creatures. Yet what you are looking for, 'strengthening,' or 'repairing,' is a rather simple spell. So simple that even a boy with no talents has been known to learn it."

-- helpful? Perhaps not exactly.

That remark merits a laugh. "Ah, it would be well if you were." Laughter aside, he means that quite sincerely. "Such ambition should at least grant me entertainment."

Even if they are strangers, it would not surprise Gilgamesh whatsoever were he to learn that her preferred method involves destruction. Nothing about her demeanor is suggestive of patience or delicacy.

"Perhaps I spoke too soon... I recall that this 'Fellden' has its own system of magic." In his world, at least, repairing a broken device would not have been exceedingly difficult for those mages, but it may be different here. "Yet I am certain that if you cannot bring yourself to believe, then you cannot execute a spell ... in any world."

Gilgamesh listens and watches her. It would appear that he has struck a nerve through those words about belief. Not that Jessica would know it, of course, but when faced with a person whom he feels some obsession towards, he certainly has it in him to be every bit the same sort of monster. Tyrannical passions dictate seeing others as his possessions, and that can lead down a very dark road indeed. Here and now, he has no reason for that side of his personality to manifest. His temper for the moment, with all its circumstances, is much subdued.

"Ah... of course. It is natural that you should not wish to be someone's sport. But what of this war?" Calmly in the face of her temper, he walks past Jessica, running his fingers over the edge of one of the books on the shelf of the library. Magic, is it? And now he, a being crafted from magic in his own world, was beholden to this same system. How curious. "There is no guarantee that we are not all merely taken here for the entertainment of another. There are no guarantees as to the honesty of those for whom we are conscripts. As I recall, you made this observation yourself. Defiance in the face of obstacles, that is commendable -- but practically speaking, what shall you do?"

He glances, of course, at that closed book she holds. She can be stubborn all she likes, he supposes. He has no objections. But such an attitude will not exactly get that camera fixed.
